Medical Director – Job Summary

 

The Medical Director provides senior clinical leadership and oversight across assigned health center sites, including the Post Road location and the Castleton clinic. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care; strong provider performance; and consistent adherence to HRSA, UDS, Joint Commission, and value‑based care standards. The Medical Director partners closely with operational, nursing, quality, and behavioral health leaders to translate organizational strategy into reliable frontline practice. This is a highly visible leadership role ideal for a physician committed to safety‑net medicine, integrated care, and developing high-performing clinical teams.

 

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Oversight

  • Serve as the senior clinical leader for assigned sites, supporting physicians, advanced practice providers, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Promote evidence-based medicine, standardized workflows, and patient-centered care
  • Support integration across primary care, behavioral health, dental, optometry, and enabling services

Quality & Performance Management

  • Partner with Quality leadership to achieve UDS, HRSA, and payer quality benchmarks
  • Review and act on site-level dashboards and provider performance metrics
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and corrective action plans
  • Support FTCA readiness through peer review, documentation standards, and risk mitigation
  • Lead Pediatric and Adult Clinical Councils related to P&T, clinical policies, and procedures

Provider Performance & Development

  • Conduct or support peer review, clinical coaching, and performance feedback
  • Participate in provider onboarding, mentoring, and remediation
  • Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer on privileging, recredentialing, and professional standards

Access, Throughput & Clinical Operations

  • Partner with Operations and Nursing to optimize access, panel management, and clinic flow
  • Address variation in rooming processes, visit types, same-day access, and care team workflows
  • Support implementation of new clinical programs and service lines

Patient Safety & Risk Management

  • Participate in reviews of adverse events, near misses, and patient complaints
  • Lead root cause analyses and ensure timely follow-up
  • Implement corrective actions and coaching to improve safety

Medical Staff Communication

  • Serve as the primary clinical liaison between frontline providers and system leadership
  • Communicate organizational priorities, policy changes, and quality expectations
  • Elevate site-level issues, risks, and resource needs to the Chief Medical Officer

The Medical Director works closely with:

  • Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer
  • Directors of Operations, Quality & Population Health, Clinical Informatics
  • Compliance Officer
  • Behavioral Health leadership
  • Site Managers and Nursing Leadership
  • Physicians, Advanced Practice Clinicians, Therapists
  • Contracted care management teams
     

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • MD or DO, board-certified in a primary care specialty
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical practice; leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in FQHC, safetynet, or Medicaid-focused environments
  • Demonstrated ability to lead clinicians, manage performance, and drive quality improvement
  • Experience with PCMH models preferred
  • Strong understanding of population health, disease management, and value-based payment programs
  • Proven success with payforperformance or quality incentive initiatives
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, mission-driven, and an effective communicator
  • Proficiency with EHR systems and Microsoft Office

Licenses & Certifications

  • Active Indiana Medical License
  • Active Indiana DEA and CSR
  • American Heart Association BLS certification

Travel

  • Ability to travel up to 50% to regional practice locations

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and perform routine office and clinical tasks
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Adequate vision for clinical and administrative work
