Position Overview
The Optometric Technician plays a critical role in supporting optometrists and ensuring efficient clinic operations; preparing patients for exams, performing diagnostic testing, and assisting with both clinical and optical services.This position supports the full patient experience, from intake through testing and eyewear services; contributing to accurate diagnoses, smooth patient flow, and high-quality care delivery.
What You’ll Do
Clinical Support & Diagnostic Testing
- Obtain patient history, perform visual acuity screening, and document patient concerns
- Conduct diagnostic testing including tonometry, retinal imaging, visual fields, and corneal topography
- Prepare patients for exams and assist optometrists with procedures
- Administer eye drops and medications as directed
- Clean, disinfect, and calibrate optometric equipment to maintain clinical standards
Patient Experience & Education
- Guide patients through exams and explain procedures to ensure comfort and understanding
- Provide education on eye health, contact lens use, and vision care
- Assist with contact lens fittings, including insertion, removal, and care instructions
Optical Services & Care Coordination
- Support frame and lens selection based on patient needs, insurance, and sliding fee scale guidelines
- Order, dispense, and manage eyewear inventory
- Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for exams and optical services
- Collect payments and support billing processes
- Assist with scheduling and patient flow to maintain provider productivity
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete accurate and timely documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and organizational standards
- Ensure exam rooms and optical areas remain clean, stocked, and organized
What You Bring
Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and multitasking abilities
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, team-based healthcare environment
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn EHR systems
Preferred
- Prior experience in an optometry or ophthalmology setting
- Knowledge of eye anatomy, vision testing procedures, and optical terminology
- Experience using optometric equipment and diagnostic tools
- Familiarity with insurance verification and optical sales processes
