February is Children’s Dental Health Month! Did you know that nearly half of children ages 6–9 have experienced cavities in their primary teeth? Tooth decay remains a significant and preventable health issue for children across the United States. To help address this concern, our Dental Director, Dr. Jason Hua, has developed practical tips for parents to reduce the risk of tooth decay in children.
Oral Health Routine
One of the best things you can do to protect your child’s dental health is to ensure they engage in proper oral hygiene. Ensure children brush their teeth consistently to reduce plaque and protect their enamel. Dr. Hua adds, “I encourage parents to take an active role in protecting their children from tooth decay. One of the most important steps is establishing a consistent oral health routine, making sure children brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.”
Listen to your child’s dentist on other ways to support their oral hygiene routines and goals, including flossing and procedures as recommended. You can set an example for your children by ensuring you are taking charge of your own oral health as well!
Regular Dentist Visits
“Regular dental visits, beginning with a child’s first tooth, are another key component of oral health,” says Dr. Hua. “Ongoing appointments allow dental providers to identify and treat cavities early, clean the teeth, and apply fluoride when needed.”
It is crucial to begin your child’s dental appointments early to set them up for success. Dentist’s recommendations provide expert advice for your child’s specific needs. Regular cleanings and checkups can reduce the risk of tooth decay and keep children healthier over time.
By maintaining oral health routines and dentist appointments, you can steer your child on a path to better health! Cavities are the most common chronic condition among U.S. children, affecting nearly 46%, despite being largely preventable. Furthermore, untreated tooth decay can lead to serious complications over time, including pain and infection. Protect your child’s teeth today by scheduling their next dental checkup.
