Celebrating Community Health Centers: Why They Matter for Our Neighborhoods

Every day, millions of Americans rely on Community Health Centers for accessible, high-quality healthcare, often without realizing just how vital these centers are to the wellbeing of entire communities. As we celebrate National Community Health Center Week this August, we wanted to take a moment to share what Community Health Centers are, what they do, and why we’re so proud to be one of them.

What is a Community Health Center?

Community Health Centers (CHCs) are government-funded healthcare providers designed to support the most vulnerable members of a community, including those who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing financial hardship. In 2024, NACHC found that Indiana CHCs served over 800,000 patients. While CHCs prioritize serving those in need, they’re open to everyone, regardless of income or insurance status.

Jane Pauley Community Health Center (JPCHC) is proud to be one such CHC. Founded in 2009, we’ve spent years serving our community with the same mission that drives Community Health Centers nationwide. We’re also a proud member of the National Association of Community Health Centers, the organization behind National Community Health Center Week, a celebration we look forward to every August.

What Do CHCs Provide?

CHCs are a great resource for comprehensive, high-quality healthcare under one roof, but they offer far more. Many also provide critical wraparound support like food assistance, insurance navigation, and help connecting patients to community resources, addressing the everyday barriers that can reduce access to care.

At JPCHC, we offer critical healthcare resources to all who need them, including the following services: primary care, pediatrics, OB/GYN, dental, optometry, behavioral and mental health. We also provide food pantries at almost every clinic and dedicated staff to assist patients with insurance enrollment and community resource navigation.

By bringing all of these services together under one roof, we make it easier for patients to get the care they need without the added stress of navigating multiple providers or systems.

How Do CHCs Benefit the Community?

Communities are stronger when the people in them are healthy and thriving. CHCs provide healthcare for those who need it most, which in turn strengthens families, neighborhoods, and the community as a whole. When one person gets the care they need, the ripple effects extend to their loved ones and beyond.

CHCs also play a unique role in addressing barriers to care, whether that’s cost, transportation, language, or access to insurance. By removing these obstacles, CHCs promote preventative care and give everyone the tools they need to manage their health proactively, rather than waiting until a small issue becomes a serious one.

We are proud to be a Community Health Center. Every day, we get to see firsthand the impact that accessible, comprehensive healthcare has on our communities, and it’s a responsibility we take seriously. Thank you to all our patients who trust us with their care!

We invite you to join us in advocating for Community Health Centers and the continued support they need to keep serving communities like ours across the country.

Whether you’re looking for primary care, dental services, behavioral health support, or help navigating insurance, JPCHC is here to provide high-quality care for you and your family. Call or text us today to schedule an appointment
